Asana and our Sense of Self.

Asana, the physical practice of yoga, connects us to our Sense of Self.

Asana is a lifelong practice, which incorporates not only physical strength but goes deeper through mindful awareness.
We’re able to begin to notice our proprioception (where our body is in space), interoception (how our body is feeling internally), discover patterns that show up via thoughts as we aim to surrender them and practice non-judgement. 

So how does all of the above contribute to connecting to our Sense of Self? (which is also referred to as our Internal Guidance) 

Day to day when we’re in an automatic mode we move so fast and are so focused on the external world. 
Pleasing others, feeling like we’re not doing enough, running around running errands, work work work, phone call, text message, social media, news....  

Practicing asana allows us space to slow down. 

When we practice asana we are able to slow down and take a peak on the inside.
It may not be easy at the start but with consistency awareness grows, and the ability to notice. That little peak inside eventually is able to linger for longer and longer to notice.
We notice our body and how it feels, we notice our thoughts and what is showing up, we practice non-attachment to those thoughts, and non-judgement, of not only others but also of ourselves.
Judgement is a big source of emotional pain and when we can let that go on the yoga mat and in our daily lives we can focus more on what matters and release that unnecessary burden.

Last is our why, why should I want to connect to my Sense of Self?
Inevitably when we can connect to our sense of self we can move through life with acceptance of ourselves, moving through life with a feeling of purpose whilst understanding and feeling more aligned with our morals and values.

Connecting to our Sense of Self and Inner guidance is a lifelong practice. Yoga is a beautiful way to come back to yourself, your inner home and recalibrate.  I hope you’ll one day be curious to connect and see what the practice of asana brings to you.
